SET3 also known as SET domain containing 3 is a protein with a molecular mass of approximately 98 kDa. It functions as a histone methyltransferase an enzyme that adds methyl groups to histone proteins. This action influences chromatin structure and gene expression. SET3 is expressed in various tissues including heart and skeletal muscle with notable levels in hematopoietic cells. It plays an essential role in regulating the transcriptional programs inside these cells.
Biological function summary
In the cell SET3 participates as part of a multi-protein complex known as the SET3 complex. This complex is involved in deacetylating and methylating histones which affects gene transcription levels.
