The integral membrane protein 2A (ITM2A) also known as E25B and BRICD2B is a transmembrane protein with a molecular weight of approximately 30 kDa. It plays a mechanical role in protein processing and transport within cells. ITM2A is mainly expressed in the brain cartilage and lymphocytes. The expression is particularly notable during the early stages of lymphocyte development and in cartilage during early growth phases.
Biological function summary
ITM2A influences cellular development processes by modulating cell proliferation and differentiation. It does not form a part of any larger complex but acts independently to affect the maturation of cells particularly in tissues where it is expressed. ITM2A impacts various cellular pathways influencing how cells transition from one stage of development to the next and is significant in normal tissue development and function.
Pathways
ITM2A interacts within the BMP signaling pathway and influences cell growth and differentiation. BMP signaling known for its role in cartilage and bone formation finds ITM2A as an important component in modulating these processes. ITM2A is related to the BMP family of proteins impacting how these signaling cascades unfold particularly in developmental stages guiding cellular responses in these pathways.
Altered expression of ITM2A has been associated with cartilage-related conditions such as osteoarthritis and certain lymphocyte-linked disorders. ITM2A ties with disease progression by impacting protein interactions relevant to these conditions. While involved in osteoarthritis it connects with matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) proteins which play a role in cartilage degradation hinting at its involvement in cartilage homeostasis.
