ELOVL1 also known as SSC1 functions as an important enzyme involved in the elongation of long-chain fatty acids. It catalyzes the first and rate-limiting step in the fatty acid elongation cycle which involves the condensation of long-chain acyl-CoAs with malonyl-CoA. ELOVL1 has a molecular mass of approximately 31 kDa. You can find it expressed in various tissues but particularly enriched in skin brain and liver tissues. Its expression is not uniformly distributed as it varies depending on cell type and physiology.
Biological function summary
ELOVL1 is responsible for the biosynthesis of very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) which are important components of cell membranes and lipids. ELOVL1 is not known as part of a larger protein complex but contributes significantly to cellular lipid metabolism. VLCFAs are essential to maintaining the integrity and functionality of cell structures and signaling processes supporting various physiological roles within the body. Its regulation affects the homeostasis of lipids impacting numerous cellular processes.
Pathways
ELOVL1 plays an important role in lipid metabolic pathways including the fatty acid elongation and ceramide biosynthesis pathways. It interacts with other enzymes and proteins such as ELOVL4 and ceramide synthases to ensure the production of diverse lipid molecules required for cell survival and proliferation. These pathways facilitate the synthesis and modification of lipids accommodating the needs of dynamic cellular environments.
Faulty ELOVL1 function links with conditions like ichthyosis and neurological disorders. Deficiencies or mutations in ELOVL1 can disrupt the normal production of VLCFAs leading to skin abnormalities and neurological impairments. The protein's association with other lipid metabolism-related proteins like ABCD1 in X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy highlights the broader significance of ELOVL1 in maintaining health and preventing disease. Understanding ELOVL1's role and mechanisms can contribute to therapeutic approaches targeting metabolic and neurodegenerative diseases.
