Pro-epidermal growth factor (pro-EGF) is a precursor form of the epidermal growth factor often referred to as EGF precursor. This protein has a mass of approximately 175 kDa and is known for its role in cell signaling. Pro-EGF is expressed in various tissues including the kidney salivary glands and the gastrointestinal tract. Upon cleavage it releases the smaller active form of EGF which then modulates numerous cellular processes by binding to the EGF receptor (EGFR).
Biological function summary
Pro-EGF plays a critical role in cellular growth and differentiation. Through its conversion to active EGF it interacts with the EGF receptor initiating a cascade of signaling events. This process regulates processes such as inflammation wound healing and embryonic development. Pro-EGF does not form part of a higher-order complex but acts through interactions with its receptor to elicit biological responses.
Pathways
Pro-EGF's function is integral to the MAPK/ERK signaling pathway. It activates this pathway through EGFR binding promoting cellular proliferation and differentiation processes. Pro-EGF also participates in the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway influencing cell survival and growth.
