Transglutaminase 5 (TGM5) also known as TGase 5 or TG5 is an enzyme part of the transglutaminase family. This enzyme has a molecular mass of about 78 kDa and plays a role in catalyzing the formation of epsilon-(gamma-glutamyl) lysine isopeptide bonds. These covalent bonds contribute to the stability and mechanical properties of proteins. TGM5 is expressed in various tissues with a strong presence in the epidermis indicating its significance in skin cell function and differentiation.
Biological function summary
TGM5 participates in skin barrier formation and homeostasis. TGM5 acts as a contributor to the crosslinking of structural proteins in the stratum corneum the outermost skin layer. It functions collaboratively integrating with other enzymes within a network that ensures the integrity of the epidermal barrier.
