The protease Granzyme M also known as EC 3.4.21.79 plays a vital role in immune function. It belongs to the serine protease family and has a molecular mass of approximately 27 kDa. Granzyme M is expressed in natural killer (NK) cells and cytotoxic T lymphocytes. These immune cells utilize Granzyme M to induce apoptosis in target cells acting as a defense mechanism against infections and tumors.
Biological function summary
The protease Granzyme M contributes to the induction of cell death. Notably it does not form part of a larger complex and acts independently. Its primary function is to cleave intracellular substrates which leads to the disintegration of target cells' structural proteins and the ultimate demise of infected or cancerous cells.
