GPR40 also known as Free Fatty Acid Receptor 1 (FFAR1) is a G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) that primarily binds long-chain free fatty acids. It has a molecular mass of approximately 35 kDa. This receptor is mainly expressed in the pancreatic beta cells and to a lesser extent in the brain gastrointestinal tract and immune cells. GPR40 plays a significant role in mediating the effects of fatty acids on various cells by acting as a signaling receptor in these tissues.
Biological function summary
GPR40 is integral to the regulation of glucose homeostasis. This receptor functions as a part of a complex that facilitates the enhancement of insulin secretion in response to elevated blood glucose levels. When activated GPR40 modulates the release of insulin from pancreatic beta cells contributing significantly to glucose metabolism.
