OBFC2A also known as hSSB2 is a single-stranded DNA-binding protein with a molecular mass of approximately 29 kDa. It expresses in several tissues including the brain heart and skeletal muscle. OBFC2A plays a role in protecting single-stranded DNA regions during DNA replication and repair. By binding to single-stranded DNA OBFC2A prevents unwanted DNA degradation and assists in maintaining genome stability.
Biological function summary
OBFC2A participates in DNA replication and repair processes. It forms part of the telomere maintenance complex where its function ensures effective telomere replication and elongation. This involvement helps preserve chromosomal integrity. By working within this complex OBFC2A contributes to the overall stability and maintenance of genetic information during cell division.
Pathways
OBFC2A is important in telomere maintenance and the DNA damage response pathways. In the telomere maintenance pathway OBFC2A interacts with proteins like POT1 and TPP1 which are part of the shelterin complex ensuring proper telomeric function. In the DNA damage response pathway OBFC2A works alongside proteins such as ATR contributing to the recognition and repair of damaged DNA signaling the appropriate cellular responses to maintain genetic fidelity.
OBFC2A has associations with cancer and telomere-related disorders. Its involvement in maintaining telomere integrity makes it relevant in cancer progression as mutations or dysregulation in OBFC2A could potentially lead to genomic instability and tumorigenesis. Furthermore its interaction with proteins like POT1 connects it to hereditary disorders such as dyskeratosis congenita where telomere maintenance is compromised resulting in premature cell aging and related pathologies.
