SFRS9 also known as SRSF9 or SRp30c is a serine/arginine-rich splicing factor critical for splicing regulation in pre-mRNA processing. Its molecular mass is approximately 28 kDa. SFRS9 is widely expressed in various tissues including the brain liver and heart. This protein belongs to the SR protein family characterized by their role in spliceosome assembly and exon selection during RNA splicing.
Biological function summary
SFRS9 contributes to the regulation of alternative splicing which increases the diversity of the proteome. It does not work alone but within the spliceosome complex where it interacts with other splicing factors. This activity helps determine which exons are included or excluded in the final mRNA affecting protein variety and cellular function. By controlling splicing events SFRS9 can influence gene expression and cellular responses to environmental cues.
Pathways
SFRS9 serves as a significant player in the RNA processing pathway. It helps modulate gene expression post-transcriptionally by governing the splicing fate of pre-mRNA transcripts. Its role intersects with pathways like the mRNA surveillance pathway where it ensures correct mRNA synthesis and processing. SFRS9's activity is also associated with other splicing factors such as SF2/ASF in regulating alternative splicing.
SFRS9 has connections to cancer and neurodegenerative disorders. Aberrations in alternative splicing patterns regulated by SFRS9 may lead to oncogenic transformations and neuronal dysfunction. In cancer its altered splicing activity can result in tumor progression. Interactions between SFRS9 and proteins involved in splicing like hnRNPs may have contributions in abnormal splicing patterns linked with these conditions.
