RGS22 also known as Regulator of G-Protein Signaling 22 is a member of the RGS protein family with a molecular weight of approximately 155 kDa. This protein modulates the activity of G-proteins by accelerating the deactivation of GTP-bound alpha subunits. RGS22 reduces the lifespan of active G-protein signaling playing a role in signal termination. Expression occurs largely in the testes and it's found in smaller amounts in other tissues like the brain.
Biological function summary
This protein impacts reproductive and neuronal signaling. It forms part of signal transduction complexes that regulate physiological processes. RGS22 interacts with other proteins and cellular components to maintain the proper function of G-protein signaling in specialized tissues. Its activity influences key cellular responses essential for the regulation of several processes particularly in tissues where signaling accuracy requires precise control.
Pathways
RGS22 participates prominently in the G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling pathway and the Wnt signaling pathway. Within these pathways RGS22 associates with the G-protein alpha subunits to modulate signal transduction and cellular responses. It interacts with proteins like Gαs and Gαi which are part of the broader network of signaling proteins. These pathways highlight the regulatory role of RGS22 in complex cellular functions and physiological responses.
Abnormal expression or function of RGS22 associates with reproductive disorders and certain neurological diseases. Its dysregulation might contribute to issues like infertility through its impact on signaling in the testes. In neurological contexts RGS22 has been connected to disorders where G-protein signaling balance is disrupted potentially associating with proteins like Gα subunits. Understanding RGS22's role in these diseases could aid in developing targeted therapies.
