PID1 also known as Phosphotyrosine Interaction Domain-Containing 1 is a protein with a molecular mass of approximately 124 kDa. This protein serves significant mechanical roles within the cell involved in various signaling pathways. PID1 expresses itself prominently in adipose tissue skeletal muscle and cardiac tissues marking its potential impact on metabolic processes. Researchers sometimes refer to PID1 as NYGGF4 especially in studies relating to energy metabolism and insulin sensitivity.
Biological function summary
This protein plays notable roles in cellular metabolism and energy management. Although not traditionally seen as part of a complex PID1's function influences mitochondrial activity and insulin signaling pathways. It modulates the activation of several metabolic enzymes and receptors impacting glucose uptake and lipid metabolism. Researchers have highlighted its role in regulating mitochondrial biogenesis hinting at broader implications for energy expenditure within cells.
Pathways
PID1 interacts importantly within the insulin receptor signaling and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathways. Its involvement in insulin receptor signaling places PID1 at a nexus point with proteins like insulin receptor substrate 1 (IRS-1) and glucose transporter type 4 (GLUT4) contributing directly to glucose homeostasis. Through AMP-activated protein kinase pathways PID1 plays a role in cellular energy status sensing adjusting cellular energy outputs in response to changes in nutrient availability.
PID1 has links to metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. Its influence on insulin signaling pathways implies that altered PID1 function or expression may contribute to insulin resistance a hallmark of type 2 diabetes. Furthermore studies suggest that in metabolic syndrome PID1 potentially interacts with proteins like peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) offering insights into adipocyte differentiation and lipid handling. This connection makes PID1 a potential target for therapeutic strategies addressing metabolic and insulin-related disorders.
