Parainfluenza Virus type 1 Fusion Protein also known as F1 protein facilitates the fusion of the viral envelope with the host cell membrane enabling viral entry. The protein plays a critical role in the virus's ability to invade host cells and initiate infection. Known for being expressed on the surface of the Parainfluenza Virus the Fusion Protein shows a mass of approximately 60 kDa. This molecular feature is essential for its mechanical function during the viral life cycle.
Biological function summary
The F1 Protein participates in the formation of a multiprotein complex that is necessary for viral infectivity. It interacts with other viral proteins to promote fusion activity allowing the virus to penetrate the host cell effectively. This interaction suggests its involvement in tolerating structural changes that facilitate the fusion process strongly impacting the efficiency of viral spread within the host.
Pathways
The Fusion Protein plays a significant role in the viral replication pathway by catalyzing membrane fusion. Its function interrelates with cellular pathways involved in endocytosis which the virus exploits to gain entry. The protein's activity is connected with hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) another viral protein that assists in attaching the virus to the host cell surface before fusion occurs.
The F1 Protein is closely related to respiratory illnesses specifically those caused by Human Parainfluenza Virus type 1. The infection may lead to conditions like croup or bronchiolitis in children. Moreover its fusion activity is linked with persistent viral infections where it may interact with hosts' immune-related proteins like interferon response pathways contributing to disease pathogenesis and immune evasion strategies of the virus.
