Parainfluenza Virus Type 2 Hemagglutinin also known as HPIV-2 Hemagglutinin acts as an important protein for viral entry into host cells. This protein is expressed on the surface of the parainfluenza virus and has a molecular mass of approximately 69 kDa. Hemagglutinin binds to sialic acid receptors on the host cell membrane facilitating the initial phase of infection by enabling viral attachment and entry into the host cell. The process of viral fusion also depends on hemagglutinin's structural conformations.
Biological function summary
Parainfluenza Virus Type 2 Hemagglutinin interacts with host cell membranes to trigger membrane fusion leading to viral proliferation. It is a critical component of the viral envelope working in concert with neuraminidase proteins in the viral machinery responsible for successful infection and replication. Hemagglutinin not only initiates viral entry but also stabilizes the viral particle during the transmission between hosts.
Pathways
Parainfluenza Virus Type 2 Hemagglutinin plays an integral role in the viral replication pathway. This protein interfaces with the host endocytosis pathway triggering the fusion of viral and host membranes. It is part of a network involving the F protein which aids in fusion and release of the viral genome into the host cell cytoplasm. These interactions and pathway integrations are vital for effective viral life cycle and propagation.
Parainfluenza Virus Type 2 Hemagglutinin is associated with respiratory illnesses such as croup and bronchiolitis. These conditions often lead to complications in immunocompromised individuals. In this context the hemagglutinin protein's interaction with host immunity proteins determines the severity and progression of these respiratory diseases. Understanding these aspects is critical for developing targeted vaccines and therapeutic strategies.
