HIG2 also known as Hypoxia-Inducible Gene 2 is a protein involved in lipid metabolism. HIG2 has a molecular mass of approximately 79 kDa. It is expressed in various tissues with elevated levels in adipose tissue and several cancer types. The protein plays an important role in the regulation of lipid droplet formation and energy balance within the cells making it an interesting target of study for metabolic and cancer research.
Biological function summary
HIG2 is known to interact with other proteins involved in lipid metabolism. It does not function as part of a complex but influences the storage and mobilization of fats within cells. HIG2 expression can increase in response to hypoxic conditions which often occur in the tumor microenvironment. This association with hypoxia suggests its involvement not only in metabolism but also in cancer biology.
Pathways
HIG2 integrates into lipid metabolism and hypoxia response pathways. It interacts with proteins such as perilipin-1 on lipid droplets and others within the fatty acid metabolism pathway. Through these interactions HIG2 contributes to the homeostasis of lipids affecting how cells store and utilize energy under varying oxygen levels. The protein's modulation of lipid storage aligns it with mechanisms that cells use to adapt to hypoxic conditions which often occur in tumors or adipose tissues.
HIG2 is most closely associated with cancer and obesity. Changes in its expression levels can influence tumor growth particularly in cancers that depend on lipid metabolism for energy supply. In obesity abnormal regulation of HIG2 may disrupt normal adipose tissue function contributing to metabolic syndrome. HIG2's connection to such conditions often involves its interaction with proteins like HIF-1 alpha a regulator of the hypoxic response which can exacerbate the progression of these diseases.
