THEM2 also known as thioesterase superfamily member 2 is a protein that belongs to the hotdog-fold enzyme superfamily. It acts as a thioesterase specifically hydrolyzing acyl-CoA thioesters. THEM2 has a molecular mass of approximately 15 kDa and can be found mainly expressed in skeletal muscle liver and adipose tissues. These tissues are key for metabolic activities indicating THEM2 plays a significant role in metabolism.
Biological function summary
THEM2 influences lipid metabolism and energy homeostasis. It does not function alone but operates as part of a larger enzyme complex. In particular THEM2 regulates lipid metabolic processes by controlling the levels of acyl-CoA substrates. Through these mechanisms THEM2 contributes to maintaining metabolic balance within the cells impacting both the storage and usage of energy resources.
Pathways
THEM2 participates in key metabolic pathways related to lipid metabolism. It is closely linked with the fatty acid metabolism pathway and impacts the regulation of fatty acid synthesis and degradation. THEM2 interacts with other proteins involved in these pathways such as Acyl-CoA Synthetase to maintain lipid homeostasis. This coordination ensures proper metabolic control integrating energy supply and demand.
THEM2 has correlations with metabolic disorders like obesity and type 2 diabetes. Abnormal THEM2 function can lead to imbalances in lipid metabolism contributing to the development of these conditions. It also shows connections with adiponectin a protein hormone involved in glucose regulation and fatty acid breakdown which may influence the progression of these disorders. Understanding THEM2 and its interactions helps identify potential therapeutic targets for treating metabolic diseases.
