SMC1L2 also known as Structural Maintenance of Chromosomes 1-Like 2 is a protein involved in important processes in cell division. It is a part of the cohesin complex a structure that regulates the cohesion of sister chromatids during cell division. SMC1L2 has a molecular mass of approximately 155 kDa. This protein is expressed in various tissues with notable expression in testis and other reproductive organs reflecting its involvement in meiotic cell division.
Biological function summary
This protein plays a significant role in ensuring the accurate segregation of chromosomes during both mitosis and meiosis. SMC1L2 is an important component of the cohesin complex interacting closely with other proteins like SMC3 RAD21 and STAG3. By holding sister chromatids together it helps maintain genomic stability and prevents aneuploidy which can lead to compromised cell function or cell death if not regulated properly.
