PRAP1 sometimes referred to as Proline-Rich Acidic Protein 1 is a protein with a mass of approximately 18 kDa. It localizes mainly in the cell nucleus and has a restricted expression pattern found predominately in epithelial tissues such as the gastrointestinal tract and the reproductive system. This suggests that it might have functions related to those specific cell types.
Biological function summary
PRAP1 plays a role in cellular processes such as proliferation and differentiation. It does not seem to form part of any well-characterized multiprotein complex but its expression pattern implies a relevance in the development and maintenance of epithelial cells. Studies have suggested that PRAP1 may interact with various nuclear factors potentially influencing transcriptional regulation in specific tissue types.
Pathways
PRAP1's function involves processes that maintain epithelial integrity and renewal. It has associations with the Wnt signaling pathway which is important for regulating tissue homeostasis and cellular proliferation. PRAP1 may interact with proteins like β-catenin an important player in Wnt signaling although direct interactions remain experimentally undefined.
Research indicates PRAP1 could be implicated in cancer especially those originating from epithelial tissues like colorectal cancer. Alterations in PRAP1 expression and function might contribute to oncogenesis or tumor progression. Furthermore PRAP1 shows potential links to inflammatory disorders with altered activity potentially affecting proteins such as NF-κB a critical regulator in inflammatory responses.
