CAT1 also known as cationic amino acid transporter 1 or SLC7A1 is an integral membrane protein that facilitates the uptake of cationic amino acids such as arginine lysine and ornithine. CAT1 is a member of the solute carrier family 7 and has a molecular mass of approximately 68 kDa. It expresses widely in various tissues with particularly high levels in the liver lung and skeletal muscle. As a transporter CAT1 plays an essential role in amino acid homeostasis by mediating amino acid transport across the cell membrane.
Biological function summary
CAT1 influences nitric oxide production by regulating arginine availability a substrate for nitric oxide synthase. By controlling amino acid imports it affects cellular signaling and metabolism. CAT1 does not function as part of a larger complex but interacts with other transporters to maintain cellular amino acid balance. CAT1's role extends to impacting cell proliferation as cationic amino acids are important for growing tissues.
Pathways
CAT1 has been implicated in the nitric oxide synthesis pathway where it contributes by sustaining intracellular arginine levels. This involvement is critical to vascular function and immune response regulation. CAT1 also participates in mTOR signaling by providing necessary amino acids like arginine which influence protein synthesis and cellular growth. In these pathways CAT1 connects with proteins such as mTOR and nitric oxide synthase assisting in integral cellular functions.
CAT1 links to cardiovascular conditions through its role in nitric oxide production which affects blood pressure regulation and endothelial function. Dysfunction or altered expression of CAT1 can lead to cardiovascular abnormalities due to impaired nitric oxide synthesis. CAT1 is also implicated in cancer as its impact on arginine availability affects cell proliferation and tumor growth. In this context CAT1 interacts with oncogenes and tumor suppressor proteins that modulate growth-related pathways.
