LAPTM4A also known as Lysosomal-associated transmembrane protein 4 alpha is a protein involved in intracellular trafficking. It has a molecular weight of approximately 28 kDa. LAPTM4A consists of four predicted transmembrane domains and expresses in various tissues with high levels in the spleen kidney and liver. It plays a role in endosomal and lysosomal pathways influencing cellular processes like nutrient transport and recycling.
Biological function summary
This protein contributes to cell comprehension by facilitating lysosomal function and maintaining cellular homeostasis. LAPTM4A participates in the regulation of proliferation and survival often forming a complex with other lysosomal proteins for transmitting signals related to these processes. It impacts cellular signaling pathways by interacting with certain membrane receptors and transporting them to lysosomes for degradation or recycling.
Pathways
LAPTM4A is an integral part of endocytic and vesicular transport pathways. It influences receptor-mediated endocytosis that directs cell surface proteins to lysosomes for degradation or recycling. In these pathways LAPTM4A interacts with other proteins like c-MET a receptor tyrosine kinase that plays a part in signal transduction processes linked to cell growth.
Mutations or alterations in LAPTM4A levels can connect to cancer and psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia. The protein's interaction with c-MET has identified its role in tumor progression where abnormal c-MET signaling contributes to cancerous growth. Furthermore alterations in LAPTM4A can affect neurotransmitter systems associating the protein with schizophrenia's pathophysiology.
