YIPF3 also known as YIP1 family member 3 is a protein with a molecular mass of approximately 41 kDa. It localizes mainly to the Golgi apparatus and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) within cells. YIPF3 is highly expressed in a variety of tissues including liver kidney and brain indicating its widespread function throughout the body. This protein belongs to the Yip1 family which is associated with membrane trafficking processes.
Biological function summary
The main role of YIPF3 involves regulation of the secretory pathway. It functions as part of a larger protein complex interacting with other members of the YIP family as well as Rab GTPases. YIPF3 contributes to the maintenance and formation of Golgi morphology ensuring proper vesicle trafficking between the ER and Golgi compartments. This activity is essential for efficient processing and transport of proteins and lipids in the cell.
Pathways
The involvement of YIPF3 can prominently be seen in the secretory and transport pathways of eukaryotic cells. It associates with the Rab GTPase pathway influencing vesicle budding and fusion essential for cellular transport mechanisms. YIPF3 works alongside Rab proteins to facilitate correct vesicular movement and signal transduction ensuring proper protein sorting and secretion.
Disruptions involving YIPF3 have connections to neurodegenerative diseases and certain cancers. Dysfunction in YIPF3 activity can lead to impaired vesicle trafficking contributing to neuron degeneration seen in neuronal disorders. Additionally alterations in YIPF3 expression levels have been observed in some oncological diseases highlighting its connection to cancer pathways. Its interplay with proteins such as Rab GTPases further illustrates the potential for broader impacts on disease development and progression.
