Alpha 2u-globulin also known as alpha-2-globulin or globulin alpha-2 is a protein primarily expressed in the liver of male rats. This protein belongs to the lipocalin family and typically ranges in molecular mass from 18 to 20 kDa. Alpha 2u-globulin can bind small hydrophobic molecules which plays an important role in its mechanical function as a transport protein in the blood plasma. It has a considerable concentration in male rat urine due to its high turnover rate.
Biological function summary
Alpha 2u-globulin functions as a carrier protein mediating the transfer of various substances like pheromones and other small ligands. It also serves in the protection and stabilization of these molecules. While it is not a part of a larger complex alpha 2u-globulin has a specific role in modulating olfactory sensitivity and impacting social and sexual signaling in rodents. The protein's ability to bind and transport molecules influences various physiological processes.
Pathways
The protein alpha 2u-globulin is involved in the transport and metabolism pathways of small molecules particularly those tied to lipid metabolism. It relates to other lipocalin family proteins that also partake in the transport of hydrophobic molecules such as apolipoprotein D. In these pathways the efficient binding and release of ligands by alpha 2u-globulin ensure a proper balance in pheromone signaling and lipid homeostasis.
Alpha 2u-globulin is connected to conditions like nephrotoxicity and hyaline droplet nephropathy. These conditions emerge due to the accumulation of this protein in kidney tissues often linked to exposure to specific chemical agents. In such cases alpha 2u-globulin interacts with other proteins involved in pathological responses including oxidative stress-related factors that influence nephropathic changes. Understanding these connections helps in assessing rodent models' relevance to human disease.
