Neuroplastin (NPTN) also known as Basigin-like protein 1 plays an important role in various cellular functions. This protein has a mass of approximately 34 kDa as determined by its amino acid sequence. NPTN locates itself on the cell membrane and exhibits expression in multiple tissues especially in the nervous system and skeletal muscles. This protein is known for participating actively in cell adhesion processes which influence neural development and synaptic plasticity.
Biological function summary
Neuroplastin contributes to important cellular processes like calcium homeostasis and synapse formation. As part of the oligomeric receptor complex it facilitates calcium-mediated signaling by forming functional partnerships with other membrane proteins such as plasma membrane Ca2+ ATPases. Neuroplastin's interactions influence dendritic spine morphology and synaptic strength which are essential for proper neuronal communication and memory formation.
Pathways
Neuroplastin functions significantly in the Calcium signaling pathway which regulates numerous cellular activities including muscle contraction and neurotransmitter release. It associates with proteins like PMCA playing a role in calcium ion efflux and maintaining intracellular calcium concentration. Additionally Neuroplastin is involved in the MAP kinase signaling pathway which contributes to cell viability and adaptation to stress.
Neuroplastin shows linkage to conditions such as schizophrenia and hearing loss. Abnormal expression or mutations of NPTN can disrupt neural connectivity and synaptic functions potentially leading to psychiatric disorders. Furthermore studies associate NPTN with Basigin in disorders affecting auditory capacities suggesting possible therapeutic targets for intervention in inner ear function deficits.
