Calpain 5 also known as PalBH is a non-classical member of the calpain family with a mass of approximately 80 kilodaltons. Calpain 5 is made from a calcium-dependent cysteine protease showing expression in tissues like the retina and neurons. Known for its calpain-like protease domain and an extended C-terminal region Calpain 5 lacks the typical EF-hand motifs found in other calpains.
Biological function summary
Calpain 5 acts without forming complexes with calmodulin or calpastatin which is common in other calpain family members.
