Alpha-Amylase enzyme is responsible for the breakdown of complex carbohydrates in humans. Thus, inhibition of alpha-amylase could be considered as a strategy for the treatment of disorders related to carbohydrate uptake, such as diabetes, obesity, dental cavities and periodontal diseases. In this kit human Alpha-Amylase hydrolyzes the synthetic substrate, yielding smaller fragments containing the chromophore (pNP; OD = 405 nm). A potent, specific inhibitor is also included in the kit.
The 1-step assay is simple and can be completed within 1 hour.

Pancreatic alpha amylase also known as alpha-amylase P or AMY2A and salivary alpha amylase (AMY1) are enzymes that play essential roles in carbohydrate digestion. Mechanically they hydrolyze alpha-14-glycosidic linkages in starches breaking them down into smaller sugars like maltose and dextrins. Pancreatic alpha amylase has a molecular mass of approximately 56 kDa.
