SARS-CoV-2 orf7a also known as accessory protein 7a plays a mechanical role in the virus's lifecycle. It is a small transmembrane protein with a molecular mass of approximately 11 kDa. SARS-CoV-2 orf7a expresses within infected host cells mainly within the endoplasmic reticulum and the Golgi apparatus. It acts during the viral assembly and release processes interacting with other viral proteins to facilitate these functions.
Biological function summary
SARS-CoV-2 orf7a contributes to pathogenesis by antagonizing host immune responses. The protein has the ability to inhibit the activity of bone marrow stromal antigen 2 (BST2) also known as tetherin which prevents virus budding. By doing so orf7a enables the virus to evade an important part of the host's immune defense. It functions independently and does not appear to be part of any multi-protein complex.
Pathways
Orf7a takes part in modulating immune evasion pathways that involve the suppression of type I interferon responses. The protein is related to the pathway that regulates host immune defenses and its suppression of BST2 highlights this action.
