LCN1 also known as Lipocalin-1 or tear lipocalin is a secreted protein with a mass of approximately 21 kDa. It primarily localizes in human tears and other secretions including saliva. This protein belongs to the lipocalin family known for their small size and ability to bind hydrophobic molecules. Its key function includes transporting small lipophilic molecules such as fatty acids and retinoids contributing to ocular surface health.
Biological function summary
LCN1 plays an essential role in protecting the eye's surface. It binds and neutralizes bacteria-derived lipopolysaccharides which helps to control microbial growth on the eye surface.
