Product details:
Human PMP2 ELISA kit is an
in vitro
enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for the quantitative measurement of human PMP2 in serum (human PMP2 concentration is low in normal serum/plasma, and may not be detectable in this assay), plasma and cell culture supernatants. This assay employs an antibody specific for human PMP2 coated on a 96-well plate.
This ELISA kit shows no cross-reactivity with the following cytokines tested: human C1qTNF9, Carbonic Anhydrase VA, CANT1, Cathepsin H, Contactin-5, Chymotrypsin C/CTRC, Draxin, EphB2, EphB3, Fgr, FKBP51, FUCA1, Galanin, GALNT10, Gastrokine 1, Glyoxalase II, HS3ST1, HS3ST3B1, Lin28, Lysyl Oxidase Homolog, LRRTM4, Methionine Aminopeptidase 1D, Matrilin-2, MCEMP1, Mcl-1, MDGA2, MEF2C, Methionine Aminopeptidase 2, Neurocan, Nogo-A, PCK1, PlGF-2, PON1, SALM4/LRFN3, Semaphorin 6C, SorCS2, ST3GAL1, ST8SIA1, Tsukushi/TSK.

The peripheral myelin protein 2 (PMP2) also known as FABP8 is a small protein with a mass of around 14 kDa. This target acts mechanically as a fatty acid-binding protein. It plays a significant function in the peripheral nervous system specifically in the myelin sheath of Schwann cells. The myelin sheath covers nerves and PMP2 helps stabilize its structure. This protein shows high expression in the sciatic nerve and other peripheral nerves indicating its importance in maintaining nerve functions.
Biological function summary
The peripheral myelin protein 2 aids in lipid transport within the myelin sheath helping in nerve conduction by maintaining the integrity of myelin membranes. This protein does not operate in isolation but participates as a part of the myelin molecular complex interacting with other myelin-related proteins. PMP2's ability to bind fatty acids supports the myelin sheath's plasticity and resilience ensuring efficient signal transmission across nerve cells.
Pathways
Several processes involve the peripheral myelin protein 2 especially lipid transport and metabolism pathways. In particular PMP2 functions in the PPAR signaling pathway which is important for lipid homeostasis and energy balance. Proteins such as PMP22 are closely associated with PMP2 since both have roles in maintaining the structural integrity and function of the myelin sheath despite being functionally distinct.
Malfunction or misregulation of peripheral myelin protein 2 can lead to peripheral neuropathies. Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A (CMT1A) specifically associates with PMP2 where duplications in the gene region disrupt normal myelin sheath function leading to decreased nerve signal transmission. In this disease PMP2 interacts with other proteins like PMP22 amplifying the pathogenic effects when its function is disrupted highlighting its relevance in therapeutic targets for demyelinating conditions.
