Giardia lamblia often called Giardia is a flagellated protozoan parasite and its mechanical function is important in understanding giardiasis the disease it causes. Its trophozoite form which is around 10-20 µm long attaches to the intestinal epithelium of the host leading to infection. The organism uses its adhesive disc to interact with the host. The parasite is able to express various surface proteins to adapt to the host’s immune system; among these variant-specific surface proteins (VSPs) play a significant role in its survival and virulence.

Giardia lamblia causes diarrhea and malnutrition due to malabsorption in the intestines. The organism disrupts the normal epithelial barrier which results in impaired digestion and nutrient uptake. It is not part of a complex but does produce cysts that resist harsh environmental conditions outside the host. These cysts facilitate transmission and protect the parasite until it reaches a new host. The detected antigens in the stool play an important role in diagnosis such as using tests like antigardia and giardia ELISA.
