Mono methyl arginine also known as MMA is a post-translational modification where a single methyl group is added to the guanidino nitrogen group of arginine residues. This modification is catalyzed by a group of enzymes called protein arginine methyltransferases (PRMTs). MMA exists in proteins throughout various tissues mainly in the nucleus cytoplasm and sometimes in mitochondria. This modification contributes to the molecular mass of modified proteins which varies depending on the protein itself.

The process of arginine methylation which includes mono methyl arginine formation plays a role in diverse cellular functions such as signal transduction RNA processing and gene expression regulation. Mono methyl arginine often participates in forming larger protein complexes.
