The protein target HIV gp41 L also known simply as gp41 is a glycoprotein of approximately 41 kDa. It plays a mechanical role in the fusion process during the entry of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) into host cells. gp41 facilitates the fusion of the viral and host cell membranes a critical step in viral infection. This protein is a component of the envelope glycoprotein complex expressed on the surface of the virion and after its attachment to the host cell becomes important for the virus to enter the cell.
