CEACAM19 short for Carcinoembryonic Antigen-related Cell Adhesion Molecule 19 is a protein with a molecular weight of approximately 38 kDa. CEACAM19 belongs to the CEACAM family which includes a range of cell adhesion molecules. It is predominantly expressed in epithelial tissues where it plays an important role in mediating intercellular interactions. Its presence is often noted in tissues like the gastrointestinal tract and lungs suggesting its involvement in maintaining the structural integrity of these tissues.
Biological function summary
CEACAM19 engages in cellular adhesion and communication processes critical for tissue organization. It is not typically associated as a part of larger protein complexes but operates individually. This protein is also important in mediating interactions between cells and the extracellular matrix which is essential for cell signaling and the maintenance of cellular environments. CEACAM proteins including CEACAM19 play roles in differentiation and proliferation in epithelial cells suggesting that this protein has implications in tissue development and homeostasis.
Pathways
Other CEACAM proteins are involved in immune response and cell signaling pathways but specific pathways involving CEACAM19 need more exploration. The CEACAM family including CEACAM19 is often linked to cell signaling and immunomodulatory processes. It might interact with other members of the CEACAM family such as CEACAM5 or CEACAM6 which are known to be involved in similar pathways suggesting a potential collaborative or regulatory role in epithelial tissue response to stimuli.
Abnormalities in CEACAM19 expression have been of interest in cancer studies particularly gastrointestinal and lung cancers. Alterations in its expression can affect tissue architecture potentially leading to tumorigenesis or aiding in metastasis. CEACAM19 may also have relevance in inflammatory disorders given its role in cell adhesion and tissue integrity indicating a connection to inflammation-related proteins such as CEACAM1 or CEACAM6 which are known to modulate inflammatory responses. Further studies are needed to elucidate the exact mechanisms of how CEACAM19 interacts within these diseases.
