GRC5 also known as PHF2 is a protein that functions as a JmjC domain-containing histone demethylase. It specifically demethylates lysine residues on histone H3K9me1 and H3K9me2. This protein has a mass of approximately 125 kDa and expresses widely in human tissues including the liver and brain. The ability of PHF2 to alter chromatin structure makes it a significant regulator of gene expression.
Biological function summary
PHF2 interacts with chromatin remodeling complexes to facilitate transcriptional activation. It is part of the SIRT1-HDAC complex which affects gene expression by modifying the acetylation status of histones and non-histone proteins.
