ST6GAL2 also known as ST6 beta-galactoside alpha-26-sialyltransferase 2 is an enzyme that catalyzes the transfer of sialic acid to galactose-containing substrates. This glycosylation process impacts the structure and function of glycoproteins and glycolipids. The mass of ST6GAL2 is approximately 56 kDa. It is mainly expressed in the brain and liver and also found in lower levels in some other tissues suggesting roles in specific physiological functions.
Biological function summary
The enzyme plays an integral role in the sialylation of glycan structures influencing cellular interactions and signaling pathways. It does not generally function as a component of a larger complex but works independently in modifying glycoproteins which are important for cell surface interactions neural development and immune response. The sialylation impacts the recognition and binding abilities of glycosylated molecules affecting both intra- and inter-cellular communication.
Pathways
This enzyme is vital in the sialylation branch of the glycosylation pathway which is important in the synthesis of complex carbohydrates on cell surfaces. This pathway intersects with insulin signaling where glycoproteins engage in regulatory feedback mechanisms. ST6GAL2 also relates to the immune response pathways where its activity modifies the surface antigens therefore impacting interactions with immune receptors.
Aberrant ST6GAL2 expression and activity link to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and metabolic disorders such as diabetes. In Alzheimer's disease changes in glycoprotein sialylation can affect amyloid precursor protein processes whereas in diabetes altered sialylation impairs insulin receptor function. ST6GAL2 interacts with related proteins such as amyloid-beta precursor protein in neurodegeneration and insulin in diabetes influencing pathological progressions.
