Enkephalin also known as ENK is a pentapeptide involved in regulating pain and emotion. It exists in two main forms: Leu-enkephalin and Met-enkephalin with molecular masses of 555.62 g/mol and 573.66 g/mol respectively. ENK peptides are primarily expressed in the central nervous system particularly in regions such as the thalamus hypothalamus and basal ganglia. They bind to opioid receptors especially the delta and mu receptors to modulate neurotransmission.
