JP-4 also known as Junction Protein-4 is a 45 kDa protein that functions mechanically as a structural component in cellular junctions. It is expressed primarily in epithelial cells and assists in maintaining cell-cell adhesion and integrity. The protein is also seen in neural tissues where it plays a similar role in facilitating intercellular connections.
Biological function summary
JP-4 contributes to cellular communication and tissue stability through its involvement in cell junction assembly. It often forms part of a complex with other junctional proteins enhancing the strength and coordination of cellular connections. This protein stabilizes junctional connections ensuring effective communication between adjacent cells and maintaining tissue homeostasis.
Pathways
Cellular adhesion pathways and neural signaling processes incorporate JP-4. It interacts within the cadherin-mediated cell junction pathway associating with proteins such as E-cadherin and beta-catenin and aids in mediating adhesive interactions critical for tissue architecture. Additionally JP-4 involvement in neural pathways suggests a role in synaptic stability and neurotransmitter fluidity.
Abnormalities in JP-4 have associations with epithelial barrier dysfunctions and neurodegenerative conditions. In inflammatory bowel disease dysfunctional JP-4 disrupts epithelial barriers impairing digestive system integrity. Its interactions with neural proteins such as synapsin indicate potential links to disorders like Alzheimer's disease where synaptic connections deteriorate.
