Factor Va also known as activated factor V plays a central role in blood coagulation. It forms a part of the prothrombinase complex which accelerates the conversion of prothrombin to thrombin an important step in the clotting process. Factor Va is a cofactor protein with a molecular mass of approximately 330 kDa. It is expressed primarily in platelets and plasma and its availability is increased during coagulation through activation by thrombin.
Biological function summary
Factor Va acts as an important component of the blood coagulation cascade. It forms a complex with factor Xa on phospholipid surfaces creating the tenase complex which is essential for the efficient conversion of prothrombin to thrombin. This complexation greatly increases the enzymatic efficiency of thrombin generation which is important for clot formation and stabilization. Factor Va's activity is regulated by activated protein C which inactivates factor Va to prevent excessive clotting.
