Hepatitis B virus e antigen often referred to as HBeAg is a secreted protein associated with the hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. It derives from the precore protein and has a role distinct from that of the HBV surface antigen (HBsAg). The molecular weight of HBeAg typically ranges around 17-25 kDa. The protein is expressed in the liver of infected individuals and can be detected in the bloodstream serving as a marker of active viral replication and infectivity. The presence of HBeAg often indicates a high level of virus production.
Biological function summary
HBeAg acts as an immune modulator influencing the host's immune response during infection. It is not part of any known complex but functions to downregulate the host's immune system promoting chronic infection. Hepatitis B virus proteins including core and surface proteins are produced in the replication process and play important roles in viral life cycle and pathogenesis. HBeAg assists in maintaining HBV persistence by helping the virus evade the immune system prolonging infection in hepatocytes.
Pathways
Multiple biological mechanisms control the expression and function of HBeAg. It is notably involved in the HBV replication cycle interacting with other HBV proteins like core and polymerase in the cytoplasmic assembly of new virions. The protein also impacts the immune signaling pathways affecting cytokine production and T-cell mediated immune responses. Such interactions enable the virus to establish long-term infection and avoid premature clearance by the immune system.
HBeAg is closely linked to chronic hepatitis B infection and liver disease progression. Persistent presence of HBeAg indicates a higher risk of developing liver-related complications such as cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Besides its own role HBeAg influences hepatic pathogenesis in conjunction with other HBV proteins like HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) which also serves as a marker for infection. Understanding the roles of these viral proteins is important in devising treatment strategies for HBV-related liver diseases.
