Hemoglobin subunit alpha also known as alpha-globin is a component of the hemoglobin protein complex which plays an important role in oxygen transport within the blood. Alpha-globin has an approximate molecular weight of 15.1 kDa and is expressed highly in the red blood cells. It is part of the hemoglobin tetramer along with two beta subunits each one containing an iron-bound heme group.
