The nucleocapsid protein is an integral component of SARS-CoV-2 virus, and it is highly conserved among the coronaviruses. The protein's main functions are interaction with viral RNA and the membrane protein during assembly, as well as nucleocapsid structure of the viral core. These functions increase the efficiency of viral transmission and assembly. In SARS and other viral infections, nucleocapsid protein levels in patient serum have been shown to be a descriptive marker of the disease progression. Nucleocapsid protein can be detected in patient serum early in disease onset, prior to antiviral IgG or IgM, and detection levels tend to stay high into the infection.
