Product Description

The proto-oncogene RET encodes a transmembrane tyrosine-protein kinase receptor that is involved in several cellular mechanisms such as proliferation, migration, neuronal navigation, and cell differentiation. RET is important in the development of the nervous system, as well as in the formation of organs and tissues derived from the neural crest. The interaction with the ligand glia cell-line derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), is vital for promoting cell survival. Conversely, in the absence of GDNF the receptor becomes active and induces apoptosis. Oncogenic activation of RET by either cytogenetic rearrangement or activating mutations, is associated to various diseases such as Hirschsprung disease, central hypoventilation syndrome, and multiple endocrine neoplasia type IIA and type IIB.
