Product Description
Lamin B1 is a type V intermediate filament and an integral component of the nuclear lamina, a meshwork of proteins located inside the nuclear membrane. There are 3 major types of nuclear lamin proteins: lamin A/C, lamin B1 and lamin B2. Lamin A and C are the alternative splicing products of LMNA gene, whereas lamin B1 and lamin B2 are encoded by genes LMNB1 and LMNB2, respectively. Lamins are crucial for maintaining the nuclear structure. They are also important for regulating nuclear functions and activities, including DNA replication and transcription, nuclear and chromatin organization, cell cycle regulation, cell development and differentiation, nuclear migration, and apoptosis. In the brain, lamin B1 levels modulate brain development. Loss of lamin B1 in mouse adversely impairs embryonic brain development and corticogenesis. In addition, duplications of LMNB1 gene causes autosome-dominant leukodystrophy, an adult-onset demyelinating disorder characterized by symmetrical widespread myelin loss in the central nervous system with a phenotype similar to chronic progressive multiple sclerosis.
