How to Choose a Membrane Filter
Medium, buffer filtration ---------- PES membrane
Low protein adsorption filtration --- PVDF membrane
Solvent mixture ------------------ Nylon or Hydrophilic PTFE membrane
Non-polar (hydrophobic) solution -- Hydrophobic PTFE membrane
Polar (hydrophilic) solution -------- Nylon membrane
Corrosive solution ---------------- Hydrophobic PTFE membrane
Gas filtration --------------------- Hydrophobic PTFE membrane 1. Which side of the membrane should face the sample?
The smooth side of the membrane should be in contact with the liquid sample.
2. What is the textured layer?
The textured layer is the polypropylene (PP) support layer of the membrane. This side should not come into contact with the sample.
3. What types of samples are suitable for hydrophobic PTFE membranes?
Hydrophobic PTFE membranes are ideal for air and gas filtration, solvent filtration, and sample venting. They are not suitable for aqueous solutions unless pre-wetted with alcohol or another compatible solvent.
4. How should I store unused filters?
Store in a clean, dry environment, away from direct sunlight and corrosive vapors. Recommended storage temperature is 15–30°C with low humidity.
5. What’s the difference between hydrophobic and hydrophilic PTFE membranes?
Hydrophobic PTFE is naturally hydrophobic and is used for gas/solvent filtration and venting.
Hydrophilic PTFE is modified to allow aqueous filtration without pre-wetting.
