Background Ly-1 antibody reactive clone (LYAR) is a zinc finger motif-containing nucleolar protein that is expressed at high levels in male germ cells (1). Research studies have shown LYAR plays a role in the control of embryonic stem cell (ESC) self-renewal and differentiation (2,3). Given its nucleolar localization and oncogenic potential, LYAR has been shown to participate in the regulation of ribosomal gene transcription, rRNA processing, and ribosome biogenesis; processes that many cancer cells and ESCs ramp up in order to support high rates of cell proliferation (4,5). In addition to its role in controlling cell growth and proliferation, LYAR has also been shown to play a role in negatively regulating the host antiviral innate immune response by suppressing the expression of type-I interferons and proinflammatory cytokines (6).
