Background Sphingolipid delta(4)-desaturase (DES1, DEGS1), also known as dihydroceramide desaturase-1, inserts a double bond into the sphingoid backbone of ceramides in most tissues. Studies show that deletion of from mice deficient in leptin improves glucose homeostasis and resolves insulin resistance and hepatic steatosis.
