Background Urea transporter B (UT-B, also known as UT1) is encoded by the gene (1). Urea transporters (UTs) are multipass membrane proteins that transport urea down a concentration gradient. Urea is an organic compound composed of two amino groups and a linked carbamoyl group. Urea is a metabolic waste product of the liver and is excreted via the kidney. UT-B/SLC14A1 was first cloned from human erythrocytes (2). UT-B is not only expressed in endothelial cells of the renal medulla but is also expressed in other organs, including the brain, heart, and pancreas, suggesting broad physiological functions. In the brain, UT-B may be expressed in astrocytes to maintain urea concentrations in the central nervous system.
