Background Serine/arginine-rich splicing factor 5 (SRSF5), also known as SRP40, is a member of the SR family of essential splicing proteins that bind to purine-rich enhancers (1-3). SRSF5 has a highly selective splicing motif and, like other SR proteins, is regulated by phosphorylation (4,5). The splicing activity of SRSF5 has been shown to regulate alternative splicing of key proteins in many processes, including fibronectin during liver proliferation, glucocorticoid receptor in hormone receptor signaling, and many HIV proteins during viral infection (6-8). Increased SRSF5 expression has been observed in breast cancer and non-small cell lung cancer (9,10).
