Background NOD-like receptor (NLR) family pyrin domain containing 7 (NLRP7) is a cytoplasmic immune receptor protein that recognizes microbial lipopeptides (1). NLRP7 is expressed in primates, but rodents have no orthologous genes (2-4). NLRP7 is required for IL-1β release in response to spp. infection, and is activated in response to infection with other types of Gram-positive bacteria (1). While the mechanism is not well understood, NLRP7 is also critical for placental development; mutations in maternal may result in hydatidiform mole, a type of abnormal pregnancy that results in spontaneous abortion, defective embryonic development, or reproductive wastage (5,6). Mutations in males, however, do not negatively impact reproductive outcomes (6).
