Background Glutathione reductase (GR), also known as glutathione-disulfide reductase (GSR), catalyzes the conversion of glutathione disulfide (GSSG) to reduced glutathione (GSH) to maintain GSH levels in the cell (1-3). GSR is one of the enzymes in mitochondria that remove excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) and protect cells from oxidative stress (2). Studies show that AMPKα1 plays a role in the phosphorylation of GSR in colorectal cancer (CRC) cells upon glucose deprivation, increasing GSR enzymatic activity. Enhanced GSR activity supports high levels of reduced glutathione to maintain cellular redox homeostasis under stress conditions (4).
