ESAM is associated with supporting the structural integrity of endothelial cell tight junctions (1-4). ESAM also plays a role in immune responses, aiding in the adhesion of leukocytes to the endothelial cells of blood vessels (4). In mice, expression levels of ESAM are used to differentiate subsets of dendritic cells (5,6).
