Background Potassium voltage-gated channel subfamily A member 3, known as Kv1.3 or KCNA3, is a transmembrane protein that regulates potassium flux at the plasma and inner mitochondrial membranes (1,2). Kv1.3 has been implicated in Parkinson's disease (PD), as its expression is upregulated in postmortem human PD brains and mouse models of PD (3). Increased Kv1.3 activity in microglia is also linked to neuroinflammation and neuronal loss (3-5). On neutrophils, Kv1.3 is essential for recruitment to sites of acute inflammation, as it mediates calcium signaling required for migration (6). Kv1.3 is also important in the context of T cell activation, which also relies on calcium signaling; inhibition of Kv1.3 impedes T cell activation (7-9).
